Researchers followed 1.904 women who had depression for three years. They observed that women who do an average of 150 minutes of moderate exercise (golf, tennis, aerobics classes, swimming or ballroom dancing) or 200 minutes of walking each week, they had more energy, were more socialized, felt better emotionally, and were not as limited by their depression than the rest of the women who did not They did no type of exercise.

Depression is one of the most widespread mental illnesses, therefore "there is an urgent need" to identify treatments, including non-medical options, that people can apply themselves, said Kristiann Heesch, who led the study.

Heesch, a professor at the Queensland University of Technology, points out in an article in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine that depression is expected to be the second leading cause of illness worldwide by 2030 and the first cause in rich countries.

Women are 70% more likely to be depressed at some point in their lives than men, according to the United States National Institute of Mental Health.

In previous research, Heesch found that exercising or walking could improve physical and emotional health in women who are not depressed. Source
