What is human multitasking?
Human multitasking is the performance of an individual to perform more than one task at the same time.
The term originated with multitasking on computers.
On page 29 of his book, The Multitasking Myth , Dave Crenshaw wrote: “At the end of the twentieth century, some wordsmiths saw the connection between our increasingly hectic world and the world of the computer. A slogan was born. Newspapers began peppering their articles with the word. Magazines began publishing articles about how to multitask more effectively.”
Multitasking is not actually the performance of two or more ("multi") activities ("multitasking") simultaneously, but rather a switching between tasks or switchtasking as Dave Crenshaw prefers to give it a name.
Multitasking or switchtasking reduces efficiency (doing things well) and efficacy as it constantly requires a change in the cognitive (mental) attention switch. As our concentration decreases the number of errors we make can increase considerably.
